Constructing the Self, Constructing America: A Cultural History of Psychotherapy by Philip Cushman
Psychotherapy in America is a product of its historical and geographic contexts. Historian and psychologist Philip Cushman traces the parallel developments of psychotherapy and a distinct American concept of the self. He explores how some of the most troubling aspects of our political and social life - racism, consumerism, and social inequality - are both reflected in and reinforced by the practice of psychotherapy. It is an engaging narrative that illuminates psychoanalytic concepts and suggests a clinical approach that avoids reproducing the status quo. Join us for five weeks of moderated discussion.
